World Moringa Day: Galamsey Threatens Traditional Herbs – Bankame-Anamase Chief Sounds Alarm

The Chief of Bankame-Anamase and Nifahene of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Council, Hon. Dr. Obrempong Tabi Anom II, has expressed concern about the devastating impact of galamsey on traditional herbs.

He emphasized that the destruction of natural habitats threatens the availability and potency of these valuable resources.

He, therefore, stressed the need for urgent action to protect the environment and preserve traditional medicine.

Obrempong urged the government to utilize seized excavators in the fight against galamsey (illegal mining) to reclaim devastated lands and plant moringa trees.

According to him, the tree’s ability to fix lost soil nutrients makes it an ideal crop for restoring degraded lands and promoting sustainable agriculture.

World Moringa Day

Hon. Dr. Obrempong Tabi Anom II made these remarks as he observed World Moringa Day at Akim Anamase in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

World Moringa Day, celebrated on September 14, promotes the “miracle tree” Moringa for its nutritional benefits and potential for sustainable growth.

The initiative, proposed at the III International Symposium on Moringa, aims to increase global awareness of this nutrient-dense plant, which is crucial for health and economic opportunities, especially in developing regions.

During the event, Obrempong showcased the various parts of the moringa tree and their health benefits, emphasizing that research has proven the tree can treat over 300 diseases.

Moringa’s Potential in Livestock Production

He also revealed that moringa leaves can be used to boost the quality of livestock meat, making it leaner. This highlights the tree’s potential in promoting animal health and productivity.

Call for Collaboration and Investment

The chief called on investors to partner with him to acquire machines for processing moringa into different forms for medicinal and food products.

He said this initiative aims to harness the tree’s benefits and create economic opportunities for the local community.

Future Plans

Obrempong announced plans to collaborate with the Forestry Commission to plant more moringa trees in the forest for commercial purposes.

According to him, this initiative will not only promote sustainable land use but also provide economic benefits for the local community.
