The Eastern Regional Health Directorate has recorded first its case of cholera after a student from Kasoa returned to school (Kibi Senior High Technical School) in the Abuakwa South Municipality.
According to the Eastern Regional Health Director, Dr. Winifred Ofosu, the Region detected the disease after the student started showing signs of the of cholera.
“After taking the specimen to the laboratory for testing, the results was positive”, he said.
Quick Response to Contain Outbreak
He added that the infected student is receiving treatment at Kyebi Government Hospital.
To prevent further spread, health officials are closely monitoring 33 individuals who came into contact with the student.
“As part of measures to prevent the spread of the disease, the Health Directorate has started tracing the people the student came into contact with and with that 33 people have been identified. We are monitoring them very closely to prevent any further spread”, Dr Winifred stated.
Prevention Measures
The Health Directorate has launched a sensitization and education program across the region to curb the disease.
Dr Winifred further advised the Management of Kibi Senior High School to adhere to safety protocols and practice proper hygiene.
Notwithstanding, the kitchen staff of the school must provide hot meals to students and treat every water very well before using.
