In a heartwarming display of generosity, the Up African Movement, an online trading company dedicated to reducing poverty in Ghana, has taken to the streets of Kumasi to feed vulnerable children and their families.
The initiative, dubbed the Up Project Charity Initiative, aligns with the company’s mission to train Ghanaians on online trading and financial independence without the constraints of a traditional economy.
The outreach began at the Amakom Children’s Park and extended through Asafo, Adum, and other areas, where volunteers distributed bags of rice and cooking oil to struggling parents. Street children were also treated to warm meals of jollof rice and drinks, bringing smiles to their faces.
Speaking on the motivation behind the project, the Director of Up African Movement, David Megga, stressed the importance of giving back to society. “Whenever you are financially stable, all you have to do is give back to society to help the needy. That is what the ‘Up Project’ is doing,” he stated.
Beyond the feeding initiative, Mr Megga revealed a long-term vision to rescue children from the streets, educate them, and equip them with skills to attain financial stability.
“Moving forward, the Up Project Charity Initiative will pick children from the streets who have potential, give them education, train them, and introduce them to the Up African Movement so they can be financially stable. In turn, they will return to help their families and reduce poverty among them,” he explained.
He also lamented the hardships that force many street children into dangerous lifestyles, such as crime and substance abuse. “These children have no choice but to face life the hard way, which pushes some of them into robbery, hard drugs, and other vices. Our initiative is aimed at curbing this looming menace,”he emphasized.
Mr Megga further called on the government to intervene urgently by providing shelters and improving access to education for street children.
“Government must open shelters for them and improve their education levels so they can contribute positively to the country instead of becoming a burden,” he urged.
Additionally, he pointed out the lack of financial literacy among Ghanaian youth and reiterated the Up African Movement’s commitment to addressing this gap.
“Most Ghanaian youth have little knowledge about financial literacy and management, and we are working to change that by training people to become financially independent,” he concluded.
The Up Project Charity Initiative serves as a beacon of hope for street children in Kumasi, demonstrating that with the right support and training, they can build a brighter future beyond their current struggles.
