Dormaa Central Member of Parliament, Hon. John Kwame Adu-Jack, has warmly welcomed the Attorney General’s decision to dismiss all charges against Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, the former Chief Executive Officer of Ghana COCOBOD, and businessman Seidu Agongo.
The charges were officially withdrawn by Attorney-General Dominic Ayine at the Accra High Court on January 28.
According to Hon. Adu-Jack, the dismissal of charges is a significant and long-awaited development, especially for the people of Bono Region and Dormaa Ahenkro, where Dr. Opuni hails from.
He expressed no surprise at the outcome, stating that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had failed to provide concrete evidence to support their accusations against Dr. Opuni over the past eight years.
The MP described the accusations as a “political witch-hunt” and emphasized that the outcome is a positive step for Ghanaians, as it brings closure to a lengthy and contentious trial. He noted that the NPP’s inability to prosecute Dr. Opuni during the seven-year trial is a clear indication of their lack of evidence.
Some residents of Dormaa have also welcomed the development, noting that the NPP’s lack of evidence against Dr. Opuni explains their inability to prosecute him during the seven-year trial. They expressed relief that the ordeal is finally over and that Dr. Opuni can now put the experience behind him.
The dismissal of charges against Dr. Opuni and Seidu Agongo has sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some calling for a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
However, Hon. Adu-Jack and other supporters of Dr. Opuni have hailed the decision as a victory for justice and a testament to the resilience of the former COCOBOD CEO.
