The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin, has revealed how President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo strategically leveraged the legislative achievements of Hon. Francis Xavier-Sosu, MP for Madina, to elevate Ghana’s standing on the international stage while downplaying the MP’s contributions back home.
Speaking at the Justice D.F. Annan Conference Room during an event organized by the NDC Proforum, the Speaker expressed disappointment at what he described as the politicization of Xavier-Sosu’s hard work.
He detailed how the President utilized the MP’s Private Members’ Bills to secure Ghana’s place on the United Nations Human Rights Council, only to show reluctance to fully embrace the same initiatives domestically.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin explained that Xavier-Sosu’s legislative ingenuity played a key role in passing bills that resonated globally, including the landmark abolition of the death penalty.
“These bills were taken by the government, including His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to the United Nations to argue Ghana’s case for a seat on the Human Rights Council. And yet when he came back he wrote to us that he was not going to assent to some of those bills,” – Bagbin stated.
He revealed that the President even reached out directly to MPs, requesting soft copies of these bills for use in his international engagements. “He personally called the MP to provide him with these documents, which he used to present Ghana as a progressive leader in human rights,” – Bagbin added.
He lamented that while Ghana received global praise for this move, the government failed to give due recognition to the MP who championed it.
and many countries have come on board because of the imperfections of the justice system so many people so many ignorant people have been convicted and sentenced to death and executed when later on they discovered that It was done in error. so we’ve done so much and Ghana has been brought up”
The Speaker praised the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, for his exceptional contributions to Ghana’s legislative progress, saying “why I don’t understand why people were contesting him.“
The Speaker concluded by urging leaders to prioritize national interest over partisan politics.
“ it’s now time for us as we have placed and promised the people to reset Ghana to actually actualize it”
Bagbin’s remarks serve as a stark reminder of the need for unity and integrity in governance, emphasizing that Ghana’s progress depends on recognizing and celebrating the contributions of all, regardless of political affiliation.
